This restaurant is smaller so itโs more intimate, which I thought made it feel more special on this occasion I went with my GF for her Birthday and they gave us a special starter for no additional charge. And at the end for the last course they gave us a little birthday candle for her to blow out which was really nice. I would absolutely recommend.

This time, the inspiration came from her trip to Australia last year ๐Add-ons: Savory Eclairs we were won over from the first bite. The chicory carried a caramel sweetness with no bitterness, balanced by creamy cheese and apple sauceโa vegetarian dish that tasted like meat. ๐Finger Lime Kusshi Oyster The Sunseeker oysters were paired with Salt Spring Island finger lime/yuzu vinegar gel and a hint of chili for flavor. Perfectly balanced. ๐Sea Bream Crudo the macadamia nut sorbet on topโa magical texture and pairing! It added a rich, nutty aroma, complemented by various citrus vinegar sauces, yet different from the fruity acidity of the oysters. ๐Kangaroo Loin Broth The broth had a five-spice powder flavor reminiscent of Lanzhou beef noodle soup, served with brioche and butter. My Chinese palate felt it needed a different staple to go with it ๐. ๐Lamb Loin Vegemite Meat was exceptionally well-preparedโlikely sous-vide before searingโwith minimal fiber and a clean, lamby flavor without any gaminess. The homemade Vegemite offered a restrained fermentation taste, while the pumpkin tart on the side added distinct layers ๐. ๐Tonka Bean Custard The vanilla custard had a layer on top that I initially thought was red bean paste, but it turned out tart, like hawthorn paste. Topped with a honey sorbet. ๐Petite Four chocolate contained popping candy, and even the meringue had three layers of texture. The only downside was that the cacao itself wonโt melt into your month The overall service was smooth and comfortable, and the cozy, intimate atmosphere felt like visiting the chefโs home. This experience definitely won us over โค๏ธ. ๐Burdock&Co

One pairing went zero proof, the other premium wine, giving us a wide lens on the overall vision From a purely technical standpoint, the cooking is impressive. Every component was prepared with confidence and clarity, and several moments landed with genuine surprise and real excellence. That said, taken as a whole, some dishes struggled to communicate a clear identity. Ideas occasionally stacked on top of one another until the plate felt more theoretical than intuitive, less about flavor momentum and more about concept density. We supplemented the tasting with a few shared starters, and somewhat unexpectedly, the buttermilk fried chicken emerged as our least favorite bite of the evening. It was fine, but unremarkable, especially given its near-mythic status according to our server, who assured us it was the most popular item on the menu and permanently untouchable. Service throughout the meal was excellent, polished, attentive, and genuine. However, the tableside storytelling veered towards excess. The presentations were long, detailed, and often overwrought, to the point where the narrative sometimes overshadowed the plate itself. Burdock & Co. is clearly a restaurant with ambition, skill, and thoughtfulness hence their Michelin Star. When everything aligns in a dish, itโs compelling and memorable. But when it didnโt, the experience felt overly intellectualized. For diners drawn to evolving menus and big ideas, even if not every idea fully lands, this restaurant is worth the visit especially if looking to explore outside the downtown Vancouver area.

It was a very yummy and interesting tasting menu, amazing service, nice atmosphere, only note is that it is not a whole lot of food compared to other tasting menus I have had at a similar price point. You can add Wagyu steak on as an additional course for $75 each and we wish we had done it. Overall would recommend for the experience of great food and great service if youโd like to splurge. Thank you for a good night!

With an atmosphere that perfectly balances upscale dining and intimate neighborhood warmth, it delivers an unforgettable culinary journey. A bit pricey but worth the splurge.

YumYak's take
One Michelin Star for Andrea Carlson's seasonal Moon Menu on Main Street; the bar takes walk-ins.
Chef Andrea Carlson’s Mount Pleasant restaurant, a Michelin One Star known for seasonal cooking with foraged and fermented flavours. In 2022 it became the first Canadian restaurant owned and run by a female chef to earn a Michelin Star, according to the restaurant.
- Order: The seven-course Moon Menu, now “Radiant Radicchios under a Frost Moon” ($175)
- Best for: A seasonal tasting dinner, or a walk-in seat at the bar
- Skip if: You want big portions or a late-week Tuesday or Wednesday dinner (closed both days)
The background
Andrea Carlson opened Burdock & Co on Main Street in 2013. The restaurant says it became the first Canadian restaurant owned and operated by a female chef to earn a Michelin Star when the Vancouver guide launched in 2022, and it still holds One Star. Carlson also runs Harvest Community Foods and Bar Gobo.
Dinner follows the Moon Menu Series, now in its fifth year: each menu tracks a full moon and what local farms and foragers are bringing in. The current one, “Radiant Radicchios under a Frost Moon,” runs through October and November. Michelin’s inspectors describe a concise, creative menu and point to dishes like “pine resin” charcoal-grilled morels and sablefish glazed with a fermented spruce “bbq sauce” finished with dashi at the table.

What to order
- The Moon Menu: seven courses for $175 per person; the current menu is built around radicchio.
- The bar menu, which offers individual courses from the tasting plus bar snacks.
- Dishes Michelin has named include the “pine resin” morels, sablefish with fermented spruce and a beeswax almond cake. They change with the season, so don’t count on them.

Before you book
Burdock is open Thursday to Monday from 5 p.m. The dining room is booked for the tasting menu; the bar keeps seats for walk-ins. The menu changes with each moon, so check burdockandco.com for what’s on and for dietary notes before you book.
